Michael couldn’t cook much, but he was a gourmet when it came to nourishing with love

I’ve been told Michael was generally not a very good cook. In fact, a story was related to me that he almost burnt a place down in Florida while trying to make grilled cheese sandwiches for his kids. But when it came to nourishing and healing children with love, Michael was an absolute gourmet!  Michael was a believer in families having meals together when possible. We know he had meals with his children whenever he could and evidently, according to daughter Paris, even though he always employed chefs to do most of the cooking, Michael learned to make fabulous French toast and other breakfasts for them.

I’ve recently been made aware of a heartwarming cookbook introduction that Michael wrote in 1993 for a family cookbook called ‘Pigtails and Froglegs‘. The book was published by Neiman-Marcus and illustrated by legendary Warner Bros. Cartoon artist Chuck Jones.  Below is what Michael wrote for this book:

Pigtails and Froglegs

Pigtails and Froglegs

To a child, food is something special. It isn’t just a delicious taste or the vitamins that build a healthy body. Food is love and caring, security and hope — all the things that a family can provide. Remember when you were little and your mother made a pie for you? When she cut a slice and put it on your plate, she was giving you a bit of herself, in the form of her love. She made your hunger go away, and when you were full and satisfied, everything seemed all right. Because that satisfied feeling was in the pie, you were nourished from a deep level. Food is something we all need physically, but so is love, the deeper nourishment, that turns into who we are.

Think about how necessary it is to nourish a child with a bit of yourself when you use this book. It is full of delicious things. Every recipe has an extra ingredient of caring, because the people who wrote them were thinking of the children. They were specially thinking of those who aren’t able to take nourishment for granted because they are poor, sick or disabled. These are the children who need food to heal. The theme of ‘Heal the World’, which has been close to my heart, is the central theme of this book, also. Here are recipes for the spirit. Please make them with that in mind. Your child is growing spirit that can be knit strong with love. When you break an egg and measure a cup of flour, you are magically mixing the gift of life. The food’s proteins and minerals will turn into bones and muscles, but your feeling as you cook will turn directly into a soul.

It makes me happy to think that the needs of children’s spirits are at last becoming important in this world. Children have no power to end wars directly or to mend age-old differences.

All they can do is be themselves, to shine with gratitude and joy when love is turned their way. Yet isn’t that ultimately the greatest power? In the eyes of a child you become the source of joy, which lifts you into the special category of caregiver and life-provider. You may think that your apple pie has only sugar and spice in it. A child is wiser — with the first bite, he knows that this special dish is the essence of your love.

Seven, thanks again for this nice story. Michael was also a good writer!

BTW: There is support needed for this petition against the Bashir documentary in Germany:

Please help us to stop the still repeatedly airing of this vicious piece!

“If music be the food of love, play on”!! So said Will Shakespeare!!

Michael is and was our daily bread, he was so intuitive when it came to the basis of family life, even though his was so dysfunctional.

Michael’s music to me is like a wonderful meal, that after you have imbibed it you feel replete and satisfied. However if you havent had a piece for a while you start feeling malnourished again and desperate for another meal!!

He was a sweetheart, wasn’t? Can I ask you a question, Seven? I think you know everything about Michael, you are a true fan. I read on the website MJ Friendship that Michael donated all his proceeds from Dangerous Tour to charity, and it’s said to be 500 millions. I thought it wasn’t so much. Do you also have this information? Sorry for the question, it’s because I am very, very curious… I know Michael had a heart bigger than himself…

I too had read somewhere that Michael was an awful cook. There was mention of burned toast and whatnot. LOL! Anyway, this article is cute. Thanks for sharing…

I just get goosebumps when I read such beautiful, wise words as these. Michael expressed such love and wisdom in everything he wrote, sang, and said! I would love to get this book for myself and for my family. These words of wisdom are more needed in todays world than ever. We are all so busy, we forget to stop and remember how the simplest acts can sometimes be the most important especially to a child!!
Thank you so much for sharing this with us Seven.
I completely agree with “debbii100”. Michael’s music nourishes my soul!! I cannot go a single day without it!

  6. Kathleen J says:

The tour may have grossed that much but that would not have been what MJ actually made. What he gave away would have been after everyone else (including the vultures) got paid.

  7. Jeanne says:

This is sweet . Thanks agains Seven.

  8. Rosa Alers says:

That is so loving and meaningful. I will never look again an apple pie in the same way. Thanks Seven

  9. Ali says:

Aahh! that’s lovely! I want that book too!
also what delicious burned cheese sandwiches they would have been!! who cares about the house!

  10. nessie says:

LOVE IT! I’m not sure I can resist buying a copy (in case I become a grandma one day?!)

  11. roxanne says:

Do you recall a passage from Moonwalk where Michael writes about as a young boy rehearsing somewhere for hours and not getting a meal afterwards? I think his warm words on food reflect a desire for security he himself never had. Sad.

  12. Lilly from Brazil says:

    Michael feeds my soul.

I just clicked on your highlighted words “I’ve recently been made aware” and just have to say that I love the name of the site it took me to: “HEE-HEE!, Shamone!” and the little sound bars you can click on over and over and hear Michel’s wonderful voice singing “Hee Hee” and “Shamone”! I just love all the unique sounds and phrasing that Michael included in all of his songs. It always makes me smile. No one else will ever come close to doing the perfect “Hee Hee” like Michael! Just had to say thanks again Seven for another reason to smile!

I have this book and it’s absolutely wonderful as was everything Michael was ever involved with.
Thank you for sharing this with everyone, there are so many things out there that people need to know, that allow them to see the bigger picture, more of who Michael really is. Some people only know about the music and dancing and there is so, so much more to know; I truly believe it is a lifetime study and I relish that there is so much still to discover and understand.
L.O.V.E to you my friend and to all my wonderful MJ family around the world
Thank you for sharing your superb articles with us

When I think of Mike and kids..
His influence on them. From a far!!
My cousine Nisserine, almost 3 – adores him. ADORES him.
When she’s over at our place, the first thing she says: ‘Hayat, come on, we have to
    go see Michael! Michael!’
I put on her favourites: ‘Beer it’ (Beat it), ‘Annie you ok’ (Smooth Criminal)
    and the bunny from Moonwalker.
To this day, she still does that.
Yesterday, I randomly asked her to say the english word ‘Daddy’.
    Thinking of Michael of course.
The next thing she said really stunned me: ‘Michael Daddy Michael!!’
I was in awe. I just thought: man, Mike, if only you could see your nr 1 fan!
I tell her: ‘Michael is mine. I love him.’ She knodds very firmly and says: ‘He’s also
mine huh? I love him too!’
The influence that our Michael had and still has on children and they had on him –
    absolutley amazing…

Thanks for this!!! I think it’s so funny that he almost burnt down a house trying to make grilled cheese sandwiches! This is such a beautiful introduction. I love reading things that he wrote. His words are so moving. I want that cookbook now! 🙂

I also have a little cousin who is just like yours. His name is Daniel and he’s 5 years old. He has a dvd of Michael’s Dangerous Tour. Another day, I went to his house and he was standing in the backyard, very quiet, like a statue. I asked what he was doing and he said he was “burning a dvd” as Michael Jackson. I said “but you are doing nothing”. And he answered me saying “that’s what Michael does”. Later, I realized that he was imitating that part, before Jam, when Michael stands on the stage, quiet for some minutes, wearing his sunglasses. Me and my cousin Daniel love Michael very much.
