Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

If you haven’t heard, our weeks-long campaign to get this awful program cancelled (ie: “postponed indefinitely” as they put it) has succeeded! According to Reuters:

(Reuters) – The Discovery television network on Friday said it canceled plans to air a reenactment of the autopsy on Michael Jackson’s body, citing an upcoming court hearing and concern by the late pop star’s estate.

The show, “Michael Jackson’s Autopsy: What Really Killed Michael Jackson,” had been set to air in several countries of western Europe and in the United Kingdom on January 13.

“Given the commencement of legal proceedings beginning next week, and at the request of Michael Jackson’s estate, the scheduled broadcast of the medical documentary related to Michael Jackson’s official autopsy has been postponed indefinitely,” Discovery Networks International said in a statement.

A Discovery spokesman declined comment beyond the statement.

Statement from John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson:

The Estate of Michael Jackson is pleased that Discovery Channel made the correct decision in choosing to cancel this exploitative program. We are hopeful that this show will never run in any market in the future. While Discovery cited legal proceedings and our request as the reasons for its decision, none of this would have happened had it not been for the incredible passion displayed by countless Michael Jackson fans worldwide who knew they stood as one and that their voices could not be ignored.

Here is Discovery’s official release:

We have hundreds (well over 500) of letters to Discovery executives and over 10,000 petition signatures!  As far as I know these are still being FedEx’d overnight to Discovery’s Nicolas Bonard and David Zaslav. This will be a huge brick on their desks when they arrive!  THIS is what we can accomplish when fans unite! We all wrote letters, called, signed petitions, spread the word far and wide, tweeted, Facebooked, and notified Michael’s family and his estate. They expressed shock that Discovery would air such a program. They finally weighed in, and all together we got this hideous thing “postponed indefinitely“.

Believe in yourself..no matter what…even if the whole world tells you that you can’t do it. -Michael Jackson

HOWEVER, this does not mean our phone calls and letters to Discovery should stop! Why? Because Discovery still have the film footage and could reschedule the airing of this program at any time (thus the use of the word “postponed“). Let me share a couple of wise quotes with you:

Lynton Guest tweets:

I can’t believe Dscovery has cancelled. Amazing. I have never heard of a TV channel doing this befroe under pressure. But keep watching them.

Karen Faye tweets:

Don’t be fooled when the devil does a good deed…he is still the devil. Stay vigilant my dear friends, stay vigilant.

So write to those Discovery executives, and call them and commend them.

But – also let them know that we know they still have that film footage and that we are watching, and that if they endeavor to EVER air it, the same pressure will be brought upon them a thousandfold and they WILL feel it – right in their bottom lines. The next entities we were going after were their sponsors and I guarantee you we would have caused them to lose a significant amount of profit over this. So . . .don’t let up on them yet. Put them on notice!

Writer Deboarah Ffrench suggests that we reinforce Discovery’s decision. Tell them it’s appreciated & that a U-turn — rather than being weakness — shows they can respond flexibly and show some decency. For good measure, add that ‘Discovery‘ will now be welcome in your homes, but the decision to cancel must be final.

As long as they have that footage, there is a possibility they may re-schedule its airing and we will have to be vigilant. If anyone sees any evidence that this program is being rescheduled, please let me know ASAP!

This is an EXCELLENT post from Sean Chai, the blogger who runs the Smoke and Mirrors blog. She has a second blog called “The Smoking Room”, and this was a post about the Discovery Channel doc, and how it is nothing but entertainment, similar to the public dissections that took place as far back as the 14th century! This post is VERY educational!

Seven, you need to add the Smoking Room to your blog roll as well!

Tears of relief and joy. Oh my. We are gaining strength, standing tall, raising our voices, claiming victories, turning the tide for Michael, his family and children. I think he would be so proud of us all for showing him our love, our support and loyalty and for speaking out and saying what needed to be said. And, though outraged beyond our limits, we did so with dignity. Because Michael taught us how to. Respect.

We still need to remain vigilant.
United we stand, divided we fall.

    Happy New Year to everyone.
